Let’s not be formal about this. After all, we’re talking about Negril, where you can let your hair down – or braid it. Shed your clothes, your cares and even your sense of time. The unofficial headquarters for Jamaica’s fun-in-the-sun vacationers, freewheeling Negril gives new meaning to casual. And carefree. Wriggle your toes in the surf along a seemingly endless stretch of bleached white sand. Sip a refreshing tropical drink while watching a golden sunset from your perch along dramatic cliffs. Feel relaxed yet? “No problem, mon. Soon come.” You say you want “laid back”? Negril may be just your type of place . . .

Only a few decades ago, telephones and TV’s were unheard of. Telegrams delivered from the Negril Post Office provided communications. Few hotels existed. The main road was the beach, known today as Negril’s “second highway”. Flower children and hippies who first settled the area and put Negril on the map have been replaced by legions of couples strolling hand-in-hand on the beach.

Negril’s powdery white beach is Jamaica’s most famous and among the best in the entire Caribbean. The sand slopes gently into a placid sea with waters so warm it feels like a saltwater Jacuzzi. Waters are so transparent, you’ll see ridges appear on the bottom while walking along the hard-packed sandy floor. Negril is a diver’s version of paradise. The Negril Scuba Center is one of the oldest dive operations in Jamaica and offers PADI certification.

Tours, craft markets and duty-free shopping opportunities abound. Golf and tennis are available at the Negril Hills Golf Club, just south of town. Horseback riding to the romantic ruins of Whitehall Great House and boat ride to Booby Cay are other popular pastimes.

The rocky caves, Cliffside, were used in the filming of James Bond’s “Thunderball”. All day long leading up to sunset, visitors – some intrepid, some squeamish – jump and dive from the beautiful honeycombed rocks. Watching Negril sunsets has become a daily rite of passage at several popular viewing spots: the Pickled Parrot, with its rope swings and slide; and Rick’s Café, where pre-sunset entertainment includes fire-eaters, jugglers and daring cliff divers.

Negril’s resorts have many faces, from “all-inclusive” hotels with casual elegant settings to laid-back budget resorts. None of Negril’s resorts is taller than the aver palm tree, the result of local efforts to limit development and protect natural resources, including the area’s spectacular offshore reefs.
