Naturally, Port Antonio is the most beautiful part of Jamaica. Errol Flynn romped in this playground. It’s not an embellishment to say that Adam and Eve would have felt right at home between the area’s lush flora and fauna. Port Antonio’s untouched beauty, naturally, has inspired authors, poets, songwriters and celebrities.

Port Antonio is nestled on the Caribbean Sea at the foothills of the Blue Mountains located in Portland, the island’s most mountainous parish. Poet Ella Wheeler Wilcox referred to Port Antonio’s twin natural harbors as “the most exquisite port on earth”.

Port Antonio’s unspoiled charm has always been a well-kept secret. It has bewitched celebrities since Flynn’s days. He set the stage for the arrival of Clara Bow, Bette Davis, Ginger Rogers and other notables. In modern times, Hollywood’s Tom Cruise, Eddie Murphy, Charlton Heston, Brooke Shields, Whoppi Goldberg and Denzel Washington have all come to Port Antonio. Box office hits like “Cocktail”, “Club Paradise”, “The Mighty Quinn”, "Clara’s Heart", and a remake of “Lord of the Flies” have all been filmed in this area.

The town’s magnificent twin harbors are separated by a 64-acred Navy Island, once Flynn’s private get-away. Today you may access this Island by ferry from West Street every half hour. Several white sand beaches and good snorkeling await sun seekers. Legend has it that the harbor may have inspired Harry Bellefonte’s famed calypso song, “Day-O”. In the late 19th century, Port Antonio was renowned as the world’s banana capital. Some claim that Jamaica’s tourism was born here when the banana boats, returning from Boston, brought the tourists to the shores of Port Antonio.

Engulfed by greenery and visited by birds and butterflies, is the aptly named Blue Lagoon, a shimmering Blue Hole said to be nearly 200 feet deep. This cove has been a star in films and photographs all over the world. Glistening waterfalls, romantic coves and the magical Rio Grande River weaving its way through deep valley and rolling hillsides covered with lush tropical forests – these are a view of the features that draw those seeking the authentic and still natural Jamaica.

Port Antonio’s downtown area contains the Musgrave Craft Market and a combination of Georgian architecture contrasting with tin roof and concrete building. The Village of St. George is an amazing three-story mall with an open courtyard. The structure itself is a piece of art. A mural depicting the history of Jamaica adorns the walls. A walk through this town is a walk in history, with its narrow streets, including the Anglican stone church (1840), the charming gingerbread DeMontevin Lodge (1881)-now a popular guest house and Fort George (1729) which overlooks the harbors with its cannons pointing out to sea. Port Antonio is renowned for its annual event.
